The Guardians of the Earth Foundation’s Ethical Sanctuary project is underway: a journey rooted in practical experience and focused on continuity of care. Its starting point is the Pilot Sanctuary, with around 200 animals in approximately 500 m², developed through more than forty years of direct experience with tortoises.
From the Pilot Sanctuary’s experience to a larger space
We are studying the Sanctuary’s development on an area of around 10,000 m², already purchased by the founder and intended to be made available for the Foundation’s use. The aim is to create habitats suited to the animals, with vegetation, shelter and opportunities to choose, supported by careful management of resources and long-term care.
The new Sanctuary will be designed to be as self-sufficient as possible. Rainwater harvesting and growing part of the animals’ food are among the approaches under consideration. These are project goals, to be developed into suitable solutions through dedicated studies and assessments.
Following the project, understanding its journey
In the dedicated section, we describe the Pilot Sanctuary, our approach to habitats, the stages ahead and the prospect of a model that could be replicated elsewhere. The project’s launch does not mean opening to the public or starting an animal placement service: the Sanctuary remains private and cannot currently accept tortoises from outside, while we prepare the documentation needed to obtain authorisation.
