THE VALUE OF A LIFE
Nature is more than
the space around us.
It is the world we belong to. An animal, a plant or a small piece of land may seem far removed from our priorities, yet have a value that does not depend on its usefulness to us.
For The Guardians of the Earth Foundation, guardianship means recognising that value and making it a basis for our choices: how we use space, which lives we protect, what we teach and what future we prepare for.
We begin with tortoises, but our perspective embraces animals, habitats and biodiversity. The Sanctuary is the first expression of this vision, not its boundary.
ANIMALS
Understanding leads to respect.
We want to approach animals to understand them, without asking them to become a spectacle or adapt to our wishes. Knowledge helps turn affection into thoughtful choices.
LANDSCAPES
Leaving room for life.
We imagine places designed around their own characteristics and the lives that inhabit them. Water, vegetation, soil and landscape inform decisions, alongside the people who undertake their care.

Guardianship beyond the present.
An act of care matters even more when it can endure. That is why we want to bring together compassion, expertise and responsibility, so that protection does not depend solely on one person’s circumstances.

Our journey begins in Italy, grounded in practical experience. We look to the future with openness: different people, communities and places can share the same culture of respect.
We want to share what we learn and build collaborations that give protection lasting roots. We do not envisage identical places, but a shared commitment responsive to each context.

Protecting life
Through the Ethical Sanctuary, we work on habitat quality and continuity of care. The Pilot Sanctuary is operational; its expansion is the next stage of development.
Sharing knowledge
The Study Centre, editorial websites and The Guardians’ stories mission help different audiences understand animals. Stories for families are in development.
Nurturing responsibility
Civic engagement and dialogue with professionals and institutions are ways to turn questions into proposals, while keeping protection at the heart of our work.
