More than forty years of experience with tortoises underpin planning for the new Sanctuary: more space for animals, continuity of care and careful use of resources.
The starting point
Around 200 animals and a Pilot Sanctuary of approximately 500 m². This direct experience predates the Foundation’s establishment in 2026.
Land on which to build the future
The founder has already purchased approximately 10,000 m², which will be made available for the Foundation’s use to develop the Sanctuary. Purchasing the land, its future grant of use and construction are separate steps.
Directions under study
Rainwater harvesting, a possible water basin and growing some of the food, also considering hydroponics: the aim is a Sanctuary that is as self-sufficient as possible. Sizing, technical solutions, sustainability and suitability for animals require dedicated assessment.
The works schedule, budget and progress will be described on the basis of actual documentation. We are not claiming that systems are operational or new areas are already ready to house animals.
